Southern Releases its STICKS Magazine

Logan, WV – Southern WV Community & Technical College will release its literary arts magazine, titled STICKS, this month.

The annual launch will take place on April 15th in the Logan campus in room 111 at 1 pm.

 “We are excited to share our newest edition of Sticks with our community,” Lillie Teeters, STICKS advisor and assistant professor of English said. “We tried something new this year and released a smaller fall mini-magazine, titled Twigs, in addition to our regular spring publication.”

Copies of both magazines will be available at the release party.

The event will feature two guest authors. The first, Anna Dickson James, began her teaching career at Southern. James will read an excerpt from her recently published collection of short stories, “Boys Buy Me Drinks to Watch Me Fall Down.”

The second is Southern’s resident historian and professor, Charles B. Keeney, who will read from his nonfiction book, “The Road to Blair Mountain.”

Southern students, faculty, and staff who have been published in either magazine (Twigs or Sticks) will be allowed to read or share their artwork and will be available for autographs after the readings.

“We have a strong group of students who have driven the publication of not only one but two magazines this year,” Teeters said. 

Student staff members include Megan Kinser, Ollie Blankenship, Jared Harvey, Connor Marcum, Katie Thompson, Clayton Adkins, and Faith Imes. 

Light refreshments will be provided by our Sticks staff. Faculty advisors to the magazine are Nathan Freeman and Teeters.

“I am proud of our staff and the work that they have put in this year,” Freeman added. “Megan Kinser has been a leading force and has stepped up this year to provide student leadership. I am so honored that Sticks can be a platform for voices in our community. All too often Appalachian stories go untold and Sticks offers opportunities to tell our stories, and that’s crucial.”
