Southern WV Community & Technical College Offers Comprehensive Paramedic Science Program to Prepare Future Healthcare Heroes

Logan, WV — Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is proud to offer its Paramedic Science Program. It is designed to prepare students to become competent and confident entry-level paramedics ready to serve their communities.

Today’s paramedics must possess a wide-ranging and in-depth understanding of human anatomy and physiology, disease processes, trauma dynamics, and pharmacology. In addition to mastering basic and advanced life support procedures, students in the program learn how to apply this critical knowledge to all age groups in high-stress, real-world emergencies.

The program also emphasizes the development of leadership and communication skills. Paramedics are often the first point of contact in chaotic and emotionally charged environments. As such, they must demonstrate the ability to take control of scenes, effectively communicate with patients and their families, and collaborate with physicians and hospital personnel.

“Among all the programs offered through Southern’s Allied Health and Nursing, the Paramedic Science program stands out as the only one focused exclusively on pre-hospital emergency care,” said Mike Smith, Director of Emergency Medical Services. “EMS professionals play a critical role in stabilizing and transporting patients so they can receive the advanced medical treatment they need.”

Southern’s Paramedic Science Program ensures that students are prepared to deliver high-quality pre-hospital care to ill or injured patients by following established guidelines of standard patient care. The curriculum includes clinical rotations and coursework supported by a variety of online platforms, ensuring students are comfortable using essential digital tools in the field.

The full Paramedic Science Program is available at the Logan campus.

Prospective students can visit the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to determine state-specific licensure requirements.
Please note: This information pertains only to initial licensure by examination. Students intending to practice outside of West Virginia should contact the Program Director to ensure the program meets the licensure requirements of their desired state.
