Christopher Lawson Success Story
CHRISTOPHER LAWSON
I started going to Southern in the Fall of 1990 after graduating from Matewan High School. I majored in Communications. While in high school I had no plans of attending college. I actually attended Mingo County Vo-Tech School and took Auto Mechanics in my Junior and Senior year. After graduation from high school, my father and mother suggested I apply to go to Southern. At that time I dreamed of being a disc jockey because I am a music lover. I found out that Southern had a communications curriculum during orientation. I spent two years at Southern and received an Associate in Applied Science in Communications Radio/TV emphasis.
After graduating from Southern, I kept in contact with their Career Development advisor Allyn Sue Barker. She made me aware of job opportunities in the area. She also helped me make my first resume.
Then one day she called me and told me that Southern’s Logan campus had a Part-Time Production Assistant job available and asked if I was interested. Boy was I. I saw this as a way to get my foot in the door. I applied for the job and after 3 or 4 weeks I was called in for an interview. The interview went well and later I got the job. At first my supervisor didn’t see me ever becoming a Full-Time employee but that changed.
In 2001 I was asked by my supervisor if I would be interested in being the Interactive Classroom Facilitator for the Williamson Campus of Southern which was a full time job. I accepted the position and I have 25 years of service here at Southern. I may not have gotten the job without the training and classes I had at S.W.V.C.T.C.
