Southern Signs Affiliation Agreement with Marshall

Southern WV Community & Technical College President Dr. Pamela L. Alderman joins Marshall University President Brad D. Smith in signing a new affiliation agreement between the two schools to help students receive a Bachelor of Applied Science degree.

Students of Southern WV Community & Technical College will now be able to unlock their potential with a new affiliation with Marshall University.

The president of Southern, Dr. Pamela L. Alderman, was joined by Marshall President Brad D. Smith on the Logan campus today to sign the new affiliation agreement, which will facilitate a seamless transition for Southern students to receive a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from Marshall.

“This affiliation is more than just a partnership—it’s a promise to our students,” Alderman stated. “We are working together to provide them with every opportunity to succeed. Whether they are seeking to enter the workforce immediately or to continue their education at Marshall, we are ensuring that they have the support, resources, and opportunities to achieve their dreams.”

This degree is designed to be completed in person, hybrid, or online. A student’s AAS degree fulfills the BAS program’s general education requirements, and they can transfer up to 72 credit hours seamlessly.

Students can say goodbye to choosing just one major, as Marshall’s BAS degree focuses on cultivating authentic skill sets across multiple employment sectors.

Students can engage in hands-on experience with faculty mentors, course instructors, and community partners to explore problem-solving methods, critical thinking, and professional interactions. Upon graduation, they will be well-prepared for the workforce and armed with the knowledge and skills relevant to their chosen career path.

“This was not a random or spontaneous reaction to update an existing transfer agreement,” according to Bill Alderman, who serves as a professor, special projects, accreditation liaison officer, and non-traditional programs. “Instead, this partnership is the result of months of work guided by principles of collaboration, transparency, and opportunity. This agreement is the result of continual improvement of the document over the past few months. It unlocks new possibilities with streamlined coordination between Southern and Marshall.”

Whether someone is new to the workforce or a seasoned professional, this BAS degree caters to a wide range of individuals and needs.
