Martha C Maynard Success Story
MARTHA C MAYNARD
I am a first time graduate from college in my family, but not the last thank goodness.
I was born with congenital cataracts. After multiple surgeries, I was deemed legally blind. Lens replacements were not in the cards for me. Although I am without a lens in both eyes to this day, it has not stopped me from doing the things in life I wanted to do.
I graduated in the top ten of my class at Sheldon Clark High School in Martin County KY. After taking a few years to figure out what I wanted to do with my life,, I started at Southern WV Community College in August of 1992. Three years later, I graduated with two associate degrees…AAS in Communication * Speech/Theater and AAS in Communications* Radio/TV/Broadcasting.
I went on to attend Morehead State University where I obtained a BA in Advertising/Public Relations with a minor in Speech Communication. I also received my MA Degree from Morehead in Communications * Speech with a minor in Theater and Advertising/Public Relations. After many years of working, I began my EdD in Education Leadership from Morehead as well.
My career at Southern as a professor began in the summer of 1995 and as they say, the rest is history. I started as an adjunct and worked my way into a full time position. I taught speech, theater, film, leadership and advertising classes over the span of 23 years (both part and full time). I love Sothern and what it stands for, what it does for the students of rural West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, and what it does for the communities it serves. I am living proof no mater what the obstacles may be, it is possible to achieve your goals.
I thank Southern WV Community & Technical College for giving me the outlet to get a quality education, not to mention a career for which I am very proud of the work I did while at Southern. I am retired now and enjoying time with my family.
