First Year Student Services Specialist

Responsibilities:  The First Year Student Services Specialist under the direction of the student Services Center Coordinator, and adhering to the program design model, will provide leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of the WEST VIRGINIA GEAR UP Transition and First Year Program.  This position is responsible for the facilitation of the admission and enrollment of West Virginia GEAR UP students into higher education, providing students with information about the process of applying for financial aid, monitoring student academic progress, and providing support in the collegiate environment that allow the student to persist and reach their academic goals.  The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of retention efforts, in conjunction with institutional staff, for first year WV GEAR UP students.  The candidate will provide leadership for coordinating efforts to plan, develop, and implement a Transition and First Year Program as a liaison for the West Virginia GEAR UP Program and College.  Maintain currency in student success and retention strategies, responsible for organizing institutional first-year efforts relative to state and federal guidelines.  In collaboration with institutional and West Virginia GEAR UP program staff, tracks student enrollment and retention statistics, gathers data, and writes and submits monthly reports regarding student success, participation, and institutional program impact.  Responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling at assigned campus the delivery of student services functions, which include but not limited to marketing, recruitment, advising, registration services, SGA, scheduling placement testing, and career planning and placement.  Candidate must maintain communication with first year West Virginia GEAR UP students utilizing WV GEAR UP's text messaging platform.  Applicant will be responsible for developing varied structured programs, workshops, and seminars for campus delivery, and advising students regarding academic programs, course selection, and institutional transfer.  Applicant will also research and maintain current knowledge of applicable federal, state, and institutional rules, procedures, and policies, as well as perform other duties as assigned.  Requirements:  New student program approaches, principles and theories that strengthens resiliency factors for new students and develop academic support structures; effective principles used in developing an academic plan, student success strategies and retention techniques.  This position requires broad knowledge of higher education philosophy and various processes, which include but are not limited to:  admissions, enrollment, financial aid, student account status, transfer credit, career services, student orientation, and other areas of student support.  Strong leadership skills are required along with time management, and organizational skills with attention to detail.  Applicant must demonstrate excellent skills in the areas of: verbal and written communication, interpersonal relations, presentation delivery, event planning and coordination, and team building; Working effectively and demonstrate currency of knowledge of computer, various computer software programs, and other forms of advanced technology utilized in providing high quality services.  Applicant must have the ability to work as an effective team member and have the ability to initiate and maintain accurate records, maintaining confidentiality.  Master's Degree required, with a preference for degrees in Counseling, Student Personnel (Guidance and Counseling), Psychology, and Education.  At least two years of experience in higher education in the areas of student services, counseling, and/or academic advising.  Combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.  Target date to fill position is August 12, 2019.  Position will remain open until filled.
